Can I Use the CENS DX Series With Hearing Loss?

Guidance on suitability for a mild to moderate hearing loss

Hearing Protection With Added Awareness

CENS DX Series are designed as level-dependent electronic hearing protection and should not be considered as a replacement for a hearing aid.

CENS provide a small amount of gain to counteract the blocking of the ear canal by the device, which improves awareness of quiet sounds while still providing the necessary protection.

While CENS may not be suitable for users with more than a moderate hearing loss, in most cases users with a mild to moderate loss can still enjoy the benefits of CENS.

Had a Recent Hearing Test?

Your audiogram will display your tested hearing thresholds and show the degree of hearing loss.

The typical audiogram shown on the left indicates different bands of hearing levels and associated descriptions of hearing loss. The lower the test curve lies on the graph, the worse the hearing loss.

The CENS DX Series is designed for people with normal hearing but may also help those with mild loss up to the lower range of moderate loss. This is not guaranteed, as each user will have personal requirements when attempting to restore hearing threshold levels.

Never Had a Hearing Test?

If you have difficulty hearing parts of conversations, then you can assume that the DX Series will benefit you. If you cannot hear conversation unless voices are raised significantly, then the likelihood of benefit from the DX Series will be slim.

If you are unsure about your level of hearing loss, it is advisable to book a professional hearing test. Hearing tests are widely available through high-street providers such as Specsavers, Boots Hearingcare, Puretone preferred network, or independent audiologists. They are often free of charge or offered at a low cost (typically £20–£50 if not free).

Your GP may also be able to refer you for a test through the NHS. A hearing test will provide you with an audiogram that clearly shows your hearing thresholds across different frequencies, giving you a reliable basis for deciding whether the CENS DX Series or another solution is right for you.

Regular hearing checks are recommended, especially if you notice changes in your ability to follow conversations, hear high-pitched sounds, or if family and friends comment on your hearing.
